You’re A Big Deal: Jerad Anderson of 100 Monkeys & thewatchbox.com

Jerad Anderson, 100 Monkeys,

Name: Jerad Anderson

Hometown: Beverly Hills, CA

Occupation: Musician (100 Monkeys), Entreprenuer (www.thewatchbox.com)

How did you get started in music?

When I was four, my grandma had an old beat up piano at her house.  I used to sit down and play on it as if it were a cool toy. My parents realized I wouldn’t just bang on it, what I was playing on it didn’t just sound like banging, so I started taking piano lessons!

How were the 100 Monkeys born?

We all came together in LA.  It first started off as innocent jamming in Rathbone’s living room with Ben Graupner and Ben Johnson.  Then we met Uncle Larry at a studio in Downtown LA.  We kept jamming and the rest is history.

How would you describe 100 Monkeys’ style?

Animalistic. Funky Rock n Roll music.

What’s your most memorable experience so far with the 100 Monkeys?

Getting to tour Europe.  It was absolutely incredible.  I loved getting to make so many people smile.

Jerad Anderson, 100 MonkeysWho are your biggest influences?

Prince, Steve Jobs, Billy Corgan

What is your favorite part of your job?

I love playing music and I love business, so I hope to continue doing both! I get to stimulate both sides of my brain this way. I especially like utilizing the latest technology to help achieve my goals. (I have been called the human iPad by friends)

Tell us one of the coolest things that’s happened in your career so far.

At this year’s Sundance Film Festival, my band got to open for Third Eye Blind for an event sponsored by the company I founded, The Watchbox. A close second was winning a Gotham Award for a film I produced, “Girlfriend”. I was also proud that my band did the score for the movie.

What’s coming up for you that you’re excited about?

I have another film project and a new musical endeavor in its infancy.

Tell us about thewatchbox.com and what your ultimate goal for it is.

The Watchbox (www.thewatchbox.com) is a video on demand community where filmmakers and musicians can upload videos, movies, concert footage etc., set a price for rent and distribute directly to their audience without the middleman often associated with video on demand distribution. I started it when the film I produced, “Girlfriend,” failed to find distribution, despite the fact we had built a large online fanbase. I realized other people may be in my position and I wanted to create a solution.

Tell us about the Wayne/Lauren Film Company and what’s coming up.

Wayne/Lauren Film Company is a small independent production company that my wife and I started. We have a couple projects in development and a film called “Holy Takedown!” that nearly went into production in April, but fell through last minute. Ouch! We intend to pick up the pieces and begin again at the end of summer. Independent film production is a rough business, but very stimulating.

What advice do you have for someone wanting to start down your path?

You have to just go for it and not be afraid to fail. Work hard and just go for it! Otherwise, you will wonder “what if” the rest of your life and that’s no fun!

WBD’S FUN FIVE WITH JERAD ANDERSON

1. If you could live anywhere in the world, where would you live and why?

Right now I’m currently happy living right where I’m at!

2. If I gave you $20 to spend on anything right now, what would it be?

I’d like to say I’d donate it, but this is not true unfortunately. It would likely go toward the purchase of new music on iTunes.

3. Tell us something about yourself that would surprise people.

I’m actually a woman. (you didn’t specify it had to be true, just that it needed to surprise)

4. What advice would you give to your 15 year old self?

Don’t do it you idiot!

5. One guilty pleasure you aren’t willing to give up?

Taking a bath with my iPad in hand. Yes, it is ridiculous. In fact, I’m answering these questions now while doing this exact thing.

Thank you so much Jerad for taking the time to do a feature with WBD! You’re so fun to work with and we wish you all the best.  Can’t wait to see what comes next!
